The Tryon Concert Association will present organist Paul Jacobs on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, 8 p.m. at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church, 150 Melrose Ave., Tryon.
Dr. Jacobs has been described as a “brilliant young organist and evangelist for the instrument” (New York Times) and by the Chicago Tribune as “one of the most supremely gifted young organists of his generation.” Jacobs is quoted as saying, “[music] should be played in a manner that stirs the soul.”
At a young age, Jacobs was acknowledged for his prodigious talent and was appointed head organist of a parish of 3,500 in his hometown of Washington, Penn. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and at Yale receiving a double major in organ and harpsichord.
He joined the Juilliard School in 2003 and was named the chairman of the organ department in 2004, at age 27, one of the youngest faculty appointees in the school’s history.
Dr. Jacobs has performed in each of the 50states of the U.S. and has toured in Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. At age 23 he performed the complete organ works of J.S. Bach in an 18-hour non-stop marathon and later performed the complete organ works of Olivier Messiaen in a nine-hour marathon, all played from memory.
In 2011 Dr. Jacobs won the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (without orchestra), the first time this award has been given to an organ soloist.
This internationally recognized organist will bring an exciting evening of music in this, the 60th year of TCA concerts. For ticket information visit: www.Tryonconcerts.com/60th-anniversary/
