The January meeting of the Green Blades Garden Club held a New Year’s surprise for one of its members.
In a surprise announcement, Green Blades President Vard Henry recognized June Current for her many contributions to the club and the community over the years and awarded her with a plaque certifying induction into the Second Wind Hall of Fame.
The Second Wind Hall of Fame provides recognition for retirees 60 years and over for outstanding service to others and to their community. June is known to her colleagues in several organizations as someone who gets things done, whether in structured positions of leadership or in less visible supporting roles.
A former president of the Green Blades Garden Club and its treasurer for the past seven years, Current has also been active in many of its community projects. At Tryon Congregational Church, she has held the position of treasurer for the past five years. She was a member of the board of Trustees for six years, acting as Board chair for a portion of that time.
The Tryon Country Club also benefited from her financial and leadership skills. She recently volunteered for three years as the club’s treasurer and served in earlier years as president of the Women’s Golf Association.
Current and her husband Fred retired to Tryon in 1998 from the Greenville area, where she had been employed as a bank vice president.
An Air Force wife for the first 20 years of married life, she returned to college to complete her undergraduate degree, earning a bachelor of science degree in business with an emphasis in accounting from Furman University. They have four grown children, who live in Chicago, Atlanta, Boston and Tennessee.
