The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will meet on Sunday, March 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the Tryon Youth Center on Rt. 176N. The speaker will be Reverend Sally Beth Shore. Her topic will be Haiti – Then, Now, Tomorrow.
“Most Haitians can remember exactly where they were a little after four in the afternoon on Jan. 11, 2010. That was the moment that a magnitude 7 earthquake struck near the Haitian capital. With its aftershocks, the quake was responsible for the deaths of at least 100,000.
How does an already poor nation cope with tragedy on such a scale? How can we help, and what can we learn? Your UU Service Committee has been working since the earthquake to resettle victims of the quake; after four years, I’ll describe what’s been accomplished. I have just returned from leading a service-learning trip to the island nation on behalf of the UU College of Social Justice.”
Members and visitors are encouraged to come early to partake of fellowship and refreshments. For more information, visit www.tbuuf.org/ or call 828-894 5776.
