Janada Carson and Lyric Flood, were both honored during Senior Night, Friday, Feb. 7 before helping the Wolverines trounce Owen, 62-32.
The Wolverines moved to 10-9 overall, and 4-6 in the conference.
“She (Carson, who contributed 16 points, 11 rebounds and nine steals) was one away from having a triple double,” said coach Craig Culbreth.
Flood pulled down eight rebounds, and added four assists.
“We came out with a little spunk in us,” Culbreth smiled. “The seniors stepped up on senior night.”
Aided by Carson’s early scoring flurry, the Wolverines outscored Owen in each quarter, leading 10-6, 30-18, 52-25 after periods one through three.
While the Wolverines will lose Carson and Flood, they’ll have Hayley Kropp for two more years. Kropp led all scorers with 19, while Sarah Phipps, a junior, netted 11.
Carson scored the first six points of the game. Early in the second quarter, Kropp sank a goal to up Polk’s lead to 12-6. Carson popped in a 3-point shot and a 2-point goal, to up the Wolverine lead.
With Polk pulling away, Kropp made it 19-8. Flood then took the ball in alone for a layup to make it 21-8. Carson and Ashley Love hit goals to put the game further out of Owen’s reach, before Kropp’s three-pointer from the baseline made it 30-14.
In the fourth quarter, Kropp hit for two points, to make it 56-27. Neither team scored for a short time after that, but it made no difference. Carson’s two-pointer ended the game’s scoring.
While the Wolverines were slated to play this Monday through Wednesday, winter weather is actively changing the schedule.
With a busy late-season schedule before the Wolverines, Culbreth noted, “I hope we can find our legs next (now this) week.”
