The 13th Singing for the Soldiers event since the program was organized in 2008 was held on Jan. 13 at Sunny View Elementary School. The event collected 15 boxes of items to send to the troops fighting in Afghanistan, along with money to cover shipping costs. Performing were the Green River Boys, the Soldiers for the Cross, and Mike Upright, one of the nation’s top southern gospel vocalists. Missing from the night’s activities was Singing for the Soldiers founder Sherry Carney, who is suffering from terminal cancer. Carney’s brother-in-law, U.S. Army Captain Mike McCawley visited the event to show support. He is stationed in Fort Knox, Ky., and was in Iraq when the effort began in 2007.
