The Polk County High varsity baseball took sole possession of first place in the Western Highlands Conference Thursday night.
Previously tied with Owen at 5-0, Polk now sits atop the conference with a 6-0 record after upending Owen at home.
An exciting game with several lead changes, Polk pulled out an 8-7 win with two outs in the bottom of the seventh with a walk off single by Clint Harris.
Roberto Taft and Nick Montgomery both hit home runs and Andre Overholt and Danny Fraga made several outstanding defensive plays to preserve the win.
Brandon Jolley earned the victory on the mound for Polk, his fourth of the season.
The Wolverines led 4-0 after two innings, but gave the lead right back after Owen scored five runs in the third. The Wolverines tied the game in the fifth at 5-5 and again in the sixth at 6-6.
Owen reclaimed the lead once more with a run in the top of the seventh, but the Wolverines again answered, this time with both the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the seventh. Polk tied the game on a passed ball and then got the winning run on the single by Harris.
The Wolverines improved to 10-2 overall and 6-0 in the Western Highlands Conference.
Prior to the win over Owen, Polk County dominated Thomas Jefferson in non-confernce play with a 26-1 victory.
The Wolverines scored 12 runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Lucas Cash, Brandon Jolley and Andre Overholt each contributed three hits for the Wolverines, who had a total of 20 hits. Cash had a home run to go with two doubles.
Fraga got the win for Polk after allowing no earned runs in four innings, striking out seven and allowing just one hit and one walk.
The Wolverines are scheduled to take on rival Hendersonville on the road in their next game on Tuesday, April 13.
