To the Editor:

Nelson Jacksons passing evoked a childhood memory for me. When I was twelve years old, Nelson Jackson took his Boy Scout troop to Myrtle Beach.&bsp; Nelson put my twin brothers Floyd and Lloyd and me along with the other scouts into the back of a dump truck which had been lined with hay the ultimate hayride. &bsp;

Back in those days there were no interstate highways, so this dump truck loaded with hay and Boy Scouts headed for Myrtle Beach. Upon arrival we made camp on the beach and began our three-day adventure.

The military had been on maneuvers there, and I vividly remember picking up shells, not of the seashell variety but spent military ammunition. Only boys would be entertained with such an activity.

We enjoyed other activities more related to scouting, but the twelve-year old boy in me recalls picking up shells, the metal ones.&bsp; Maturity helped me appreciate more the generosity and dedication of this man, Nelson Jackson, who led a troop of boys in the important learning activity of Boy Scouting and growing into men. &bsp;
