U.S. Congressman Heath Shuler visited Polk County Middle School on Wednesday, April 8, when he spoke to seventh and eighth grade students about setting goals and being leaders in their community.
Rep. Shuler encouraged the students to think about their choices in friends and in life and encouraged them to be better people. The speech was motivational in nature and, according to school staff, well received by students.
Rep. Shuler also participated in the Tolerance Week Pledge signing while at the school.
His visit coincided with the school&squo;s weeklong Tolerance Week activities. The school&squo;s Peer Helpers and guidance counselors wrote a Tolerance Pledge that students were given the opportunity to read and sign. The Pledge focused on embracing difference, valuing others and acting with respect and kindness toward others. &bsp;
