Rhode Island Textile Company buys former Mohawk Industries building in Landrum

Binswanger Brokers announced yesterday they facilitated the purchase a 311,073 sq. ft. industrial building on 153 acres off of Landrum Mill Road in Landrum. This building used to be home to Mohawk Industries which, in May 2015, announced it would be closing and letting 151 employees go. Mohawk Industries operated out of Landrum for more than 60 years.

The purchase of the building, which was built by the Sanford-Bigelow carpet company in 1953, closed Thursday, Aug. 25 and was also facilitated by David Barber, senior vice president of Binswanger’s Atlanta office. According to Binswanger Brokers Vice President Shaun Kirchin, the building was bought by the South Carolina Elastic Company and their parent company Rhode Island Textile Company, a manufacturer of rigid and elastic narrow fabrics for intimate apparel, medical, industrial and automotive applications.

Kirchin did not say whether the acquisition would add new jobs for the South Carolina Elastic Company, but stated the building was purchased to consolidate two older buildings currently owned by the elastic company in Landrum. South Carolina Elastic Company Director of Operations Joey Grissin and Landrum Mayor Robert Briggs were unavailable for comment Tuesday.
