Polk baseball team bows to weather, W. Henderson

By Mark Schmerling

A couple of timely hits could have made it a different baseball game, but Polk County’s varsity fell 11-3 to West Henderson in non-conference action on Thursday, April 7.

The Wolverines’ game scheduled at Mountain Heritage on Friday, April 8 was postponed due to cold, windy conditions, with possible snow.

At home against West Henderson, Polk scored three in the second to lead 3-0, but the roof fell in at the top of the fourth when the Falcons’ bats came alive.

“They (the Falcons) had a lot of hits,” Polk coach Ty Stott said. His starting pitcher, Brandon Ridings retired just one batter in the fourth, before Holden Owens relieved for him. In all, the Falcons plated 10 runs that inning after scoring one in the third.

That score held though the Wolverines, whom, according to Stott, were “probably zero-for-4 with the bases loaded,” had opportunities. “A couple of timely hits, and we could have been there most of the game,” he said.

The loss dropped the Wolverines to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in the Western Highlands Conference.

The day before, on April 6, Polk’s scheduled game at Christ School was rained out.

Spring break is this week, with no baseball action. Polk’s next scheduled game is April 19 at Avery County, a WHC rival.
