Japanese culture coming to Super Saturday
From Osaka to Tryon, with music and on the wings of folded paper birds, Kuniko Yamamoto is coming to share the ancient culture of her native Japan.
On March 19, Yamamoto will present “Origami Tales” as part of the Super Saturday lineup.
“I tell traditional folktales from Japan,” says Yamamoto, “the stories I grew up with, the story of heroes, mysterious women, funny animals, and mythological creatures.” Her stories are about hope, peace, and growing in wisdom. Audiences have found her performances powerful and insightful, “challenging the notions we westerners have about other cultures and our own.”
Raised and educated in Japan, Yamamoto has lived in the U.S. for nearly 30 years and has performed her show all over North America. She has studied not only traditional Japanese dance, music, and theater, but mime and stage illusions as well. She has received awards for her origami. And she brings all this to bear in the performance she will be presenting for Super Saturday.
You can enjoy Yamamoto’s act at the Tryon Congregational Church at 9:15 and 1:15. For more information about Super Saturday, visit us on Facebook or at tryonsupersaturday.com.
