James Reynolds Crook

The Reverend James Reynolds Crook, 90, of Columbus died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011 in Columbus after a brief illness.

He was born in Spartanburg, S.C., and was the son of Walker Reynolds and Helen Reed Crook. He was a graduate of Davidson College (1942) and Union Theological Seminary (1947). Mr. Crook also served as an Army infantry officer in WWII and in the chaplaincy corps during the Korean War. He was a pastor in the Presbyterian Church for over 35 years, serving churches in North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Jean Hooper Crook; a son, Arthur Crook (Joanne) of Johannesburg, South Africa; four daughters, Virginia Haas (Mike) of Burke, Va., Polly Robinson (Banks) of Columbia, S.C., Catherine Woodcock (Stan) of McLean, Va., and Fran Crook of Durham, N.C. He is also survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011 in the Tryon Presbyterian Church, Tryon, with Dr. Dent Davis officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.

Inurnment will be in the Memorial Garden in Montreat, N.C., at a later date.
