The Saluda Community Land has leased Tryons missing 40 near Pearson Falls and installed a nature trail.

Tryon Town Council recently approved the lease of the land for $10. The lease becomes effective immediately and extends until Dec. 31, 2019.

The property involved is referred to as the missing 40 because the town did not realize for years that it owned the 39.99 acres. The property, which has very steep slopes, is not buildable. It is located along the Pacolet River in both Polk and Henderson counties, with the majority in Polk County, and about 12 acres in Henderson County.

The Saluda Community Land Trust requested in April to lease the property for its greenway trail and the town deferred approving the lease because at the time the Tryon Garden Club had also expressed interest in purchasing the property.

The garden club, which owns the adjacent Pearson Falls, offered the town $1,000 to buy the property earlier this year, and the Saluda Community Land Trust also expressed interest in purchasing the property at that time.

The town could still sell the property and the lease would be included in the deed.
