Tryon United Methodist Church (UMC), a partner with Society of St. Andrew (SOSA)/The Gleaning Network, gleans food that farmers decide not to pick at the end of the summer season. The food is then donated to local food pantries.
In early August, Green River Farm in Mill Spring invited SOSA to pick blueberries, and in one morning volunteers picked 82 pounds of blueberries, which were given to Thermal Belt Outreach.
Later in August, 10 members of Tryon UMC picked more than 800 pounds of apples at a church member’s home. Highwood Apartments, Steps to Hope and Thermal Belt Outreach were all recipients of the fresh-picked fruit.
