Local author Norm Powers will speak at the Lanier Library at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20.
A native of Massachusetts, Powers spent the majority of his working life in film and television production in New York. Since moving to Landrum 15 years ago he has devoted much of his time to writing both fiction and non fiction.
His play, Dottie and Fred is based on the relationship between Robert Benchley and Dorothy Parker, two members of the famous New York literary group, The Algonquin Round Table. This has been presented at workshops at North Carolinas Triangle Theater Festival and The Directors Club in New York.
For the last few years Powers has been a frequent contributor to Bold Life and Carolina Home and Garden magazines and in 2009 his novel End Credits was published. The story, a mystery set in the film industry in Manhattan, involves a chance encounter between a film critic mourning the loss of his lover and a mysterious young woman.
He is also a contributor to a collection of short stories, Expecting Goodness and Other Stories: The Essential Fiction of Spartanburg, to be published by The Hub City Writers Project, and is currently working on another novel.
The program is one of the Brown Bag Lunch series held on the third Tuesday of every month at the Lanier Library. It is free and everyone is welcome.
