James White Barry Sonny Waring

James White Barry Waring, Sonny, died peacefully in his sleep, on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 after a long battle with Alzheimers Disease. Born in Summerville on February 10, 1933, he was the son of the late Clara Barry Waring Bailey and Wilson White Waring.

He graduated from the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Sonny was a sports writer for the News & Courier, managing editor of the Beaufort Gazette and former owner of The Summerville Journal.

He was in real estate sales and development for 40 years in Summerville, S.C., with lifelong friends Grange Cuthbert and the late Sherwood Miler, eventually selling their company, The Carolina Company, to Merrill Lynch. Sonny was a member of the town council for 12 years, committed to protecting the natural beauty and preserving the history of the town he so loved. He was also a trustee of the Dorchester Free School Board. He was a member of the Society of Colonial Wars, The Huguenot Society, The Society of the Cincinnati and the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne. He was a member of St Pauls Episcopal Church, serving on the vestry for many years.

Sonny is survived by his wife, Patricia W. of Saluda, a son, James B. (Jimmy) Waring Jr. and his wife Lisa, and a daughter, Susan Waring Koch and her husband, Tim.
