Kate Settle Hughes

Delia Kate Settle Hughes passed away in Clinton, S. C. on February 27, 2010. She was a native of Inman, S. C. and was the daughter of the late Ila Ann Lawrence Settle and George Franklin Settle.
She received her BA degree from Limestone College and MA from Appalachian State University. She was married for 64 years to the late Rev. Dr. Samuel Mason Hughes of Anderson, S. C. and taught for over 40 years in numerous South Carolina and Florida elementary schools.
She was a member of Clintons First Baptist Church and choir and is predeceased by her siblings Dr. John Morgan S., Gillie Jane S. Rector, Dr. Roy Jenning S., Dr. Herbert Grant S., and Enoch (Jerry) Lawrence S.
She is survived by her beloved son, Dr. B. Mason Hughes and daughter-in-law Susan Wagner H. of Ballwin, Missouri and five grandchildren (Matthew Mason H., Stephen Marcus H., Margaret Adrienne H. Elmore, Kristen Marie H. Gilpin, and Katherine Jane H.) and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by niece Mary Settle Reeves of Saluda, N. C., two nephews, John Morgan Settle of Charleston, S.C. and Thomas Settle of Charlotte, N. C., and cousins Pauline Blackwell Hammett and Doris Blackwell Johnson of Inman, S. C.
Funeral services will be held at the Clinton First Baptist Church, 301 S. Broad Street in Clinton, S. C. Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 301 South Broad Street, Clinton, SC 29325-2506, Immanuel Christian Fellowship, P. O. Box 754, Laurens, SC 29360, Bailey Manor, 301 Jacobs Highway, Clinton, S. C., or the Kate S. and Samuel M. Hughes Scholarship Fund at Presbyterian College 503 South Broad Street, Clinton, South Carolina 29325.
