Merchants are backbone of our community

To the Editor:
Im writing to commend the chamber for its Shop Local campaign and to urge neighbors and friends to do just that.&bsp; We recently bought new kitchen appliances from Watsons and were surprised to learn that their prices were very competitive and they had a stove/oven combination on the floor that we had not seen at the national chains. Its perfect for a big family Thanksgiving dinner.
When I need a present for my sister who has everything, I can always find the perfect gift at Vines & Stuff in Tryon.&bsp; Who could provide better service and customer care than Professional Auto?&bsp; Richard at Arledge Printer is such a gentleman and answers dumb questions without sounding impatient.&bsp; And, its much easier to find someone to answer questions at Cowans and Skyuka Mountain Hardware than at a big box store.
The food at the North Trade Street Bakery is unequaled and the Granny Quesadilla at the Hungry Fox is a favorite treat not to mention the coconut cake!&bsp; Our grandchildren always look forward to a pizza at Bricks when they visit and the management and staff at Larkins have done a beautiful job of hosting my monthly book club.
The list could go on and on.&bsp; Sometimes it just seems easier to drive to a mall, but its important that we make an intentional effort to spend our dollars at home and support the small businesses that are trying to weather this difficult economic climate.
These very merchants are the backbone of our community and they provide the hometown flavor that we all love.
