Funds raised to support Ethan Sessoms, recently diagnosed with kidney failure

TRYON— On the evening of Sunday, August 3, the local community gathered at the former McGourty’s space, located at 74 N. Trade St., for the Kidney Beats Benefit Jam, a fundraiser for 34-year-old resident of Tryon, Ethan Sessoms.

Ethan, a Type-1 diabetic, recently received the devastating news that he is facing kidney failure, prompting the need for financial assistance to cover medical bills and living expenses while he is unable to work.

“I just think it’s been really great having all these people come out and show support during these difficult times,” Sessoms expressed. “I’ve been struggling with opening up, and I’m kind of glad that I did. It’s inspiring to see so many people showing up. It’s just nice to be from a small town.”

The Benefit Jam featured an array of live music performances from local favorites, including the Trophy Husbands Trio, Appalachian Assassins, and Susan Cohen. Attendees also enjoyed a silent auction, 50/50 cash raffle, basket raffle, tie-dye station, karaoke, and more. Food was provided by Smoke Bros BBQ Fusion, which served up smoked pork, baked beans, and slaw, while Beau Menetre showcased his homemade gumbo. Additionally, jewelry artist and painter Mary Taylor had a table at the event, contributing her work to aid Ethan’s cause.

“I’ve known Ethan since he worked at McGourty’s,” said Menetre. “He’s a great guy, a Tryon guy, and this is a wonderful way to help him with the next chapter of his life. And I’m always glad to make gumbo for a good cause.”

Ethan expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended and extended special thanks to Pete and Cindy Viehman, Ryan Mesa and Gabby Horvath, Callie Hopping, Kathleen Parke, and all others involved in organizing the event.
