Columbus, NC-William “Fred” Lindsey, 83, of Columbus, NC, passed away at home on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

Fred, also known as “Skowski” to many, was born in Polk County to the late John Henry and Fannie Ross Lindsey. Fred was a graduate of Tryon High School, class of 1960. After high school, he attended Blanton’s Business College. He worked for CYP and then went on to become a Master Carpenter. He was a member of the Polk County Rescue Squad and served as Captain many years ago. Fred was known for his famous BBQ Ribs and Boston Butts. He served his BBQ sandwiches at Steeplechase and also sold his BBQ to support the Polk County Little League Association. Fred organized many fundraisers over the years to help others in need. If Fred wasn’t working, he often could be found with a crossword puzzle in his hand.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Lindsey and George Lindsey, and a sister, Susan “Cindy” Shehan.

Surviving is his wife of 45 years, Susie Lindsey of Columbus, NC; four children, David Lindsey (Stephanie) of New Hampshire; Laura Weicker (Jim) of Columbus, NC, Tammy Jolley of Duncan, SC and William Perry Lindsey of Mill Spring, NC; seven grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two sisters, Lillie Plumley, and Linda Gilbert and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus, NC, with Reverend Curtis Pace officiating.
