COLUMBUS—On May 9, from 4 to 6 p.m., the Polk County Extension Office at 79 Carmel Lane will host its 4-H Showcase.
The open house event offers a unique opportunity for families and residents to discover the valuable programs and activities offered by 4-H, which is dedicated to developing leadership and life skills through hands-on experiences.
Polk County 4-H, part of the NC State Extension network, serves youth aged 5 to 18, providing them with essential skills and knowledge to become responsible and productive citizens.
During the showcase, attendees can learn about the core components of the 4-H program, including its emphasis on experiential learning. The “learning by doing” approach allows youth to engage actively in projects, enhancing their practical skills and knowledge. Participants can also explore clubs like Sewing, Cooking, Woodworking, Poultry, and Goat clubs and programs such as 4-H Presentations and Leadership Conferences.
The event will also highlight the importance of community involvement, as 4-H encourages youth to participate in service projects and leadership roles. Parents and guardians interested in enrolling their children in the program or exploring volunteer opportunities are encouraged to meet the 4-H team during the event.
As a special feature, the showcase will culminate in the Dinah Gore Food Challenge Team Cook-Off Demo at 5 p.m. This demonstration will showcase youth participants exhibiting their cooking skills, teamwork, and quick decision-making in a fun and competitive environment.
