LANDRUM—The Landrum track and field team had several students set school records in recent meets, including two who achieved this feat in back-to-back races.
Jayden Phillips and Abigail Bridges, both members of the track team and a couple, broke the two-mile school records on the same night. Jayden pushed through the finish line with an impressive time of 9:35, eclipsing the previous school record, while Abigail followed closely behind, clocking in at 11:53, marking a new female school record. Abigail’s outstanding performance earned her a 3rd place finish, with Jayden securing 2nd in the county standings.
“We have a very talented roster, but more importantly, an unbelievably dedicated and committed group of athletes,” said Coach Christian Solby. “To watch not one, but two school records fall in back-to-back races was one of the proudest moments I have had as a coach. I’m so proud of Abigail, Jayden, and the entire team, and can’t wait to watch them carry this momentum into the postseason.”
The evening continued with standout performances from other athletes, including Anthony DiCapio, a pole vaulter who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to his craft. With no pole vault coach available, Anthony took it upon himself to seek private coaching, showcasing his dedication to the sport.
“I can’t think of an athlete more deserving of success,” added Solby. “His determination and leadership shine as he helps coach up our younger athletes interested in pole vaulting. I can’t wait to see what he does in the coming weeks.”
In addition to the remarkable records, Karmyn Bligen placed second at the county level for javelin, contributing to the team’s performance. Head coach James Farnham praised Karmyn’s resilience and focus.
“Like many athletes, she faces the ups and downs of practice and performance,” said Farnham. “This year, she struggled through a few tough weeks, but she never lost sight of her goals. With the help of Landrum javelin coach Ken Wentzel, Karmyn’s work ethic carries her through.”
