A promising start quickly unraveled Tuesday as Polk County fell to Brevard 15-9 in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference baseball action in Brevard.
The Wolverines (6-7, 0-4) raced to a 7-0 lead in the first inning, only to see the Blue Devils (8-7, 2-5) chip away before a nine-run fourth inning proved decisive.
Defensive struggles hampered Polk County throughout the contest as the Wolverines committed nine errors, including four during Brevard’s fourth-inning outburst.
Gunnar Alm led the Polk offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBI. Mark Jarrett added a 3-for-4 performance with a double and RBI, while Nate Fagan contributed a 2-for-4 night with two RBI.
Polk County’s first-inning explosion began with Alm drawing a walk before Karson Scruggs doubled him home. Following an Alex Perry walk, Mason Beiler doubled to drive in Scruggs. After a double play, Noah Harden walked, and Jarrett singled to score courtesy runner Jayce Edwards.
Jarrett then stole second and scored on Fagan’s single before Cooper Meyer reached on an error. Alm capped the inning with a double that plated Fagan and Meyer.
Brevard immediately responded, scoring four runs in its half of the first through a combination of four walks, a hit batter and an error. The Blue Devils added two more runs in the second to close within 8-6.
Alm momentarily halted Brevard’s momentum with a one-out home run in the third, pushing Polk’s advantage to 9-6. However, the Blue Devils seized control in the fourth, using seven hits and capitalizing on four Polk errors to score nine runs and take a commanding 15-9 lead that would stand as the final score.
The Wolverines return to action Wednesday, traveling to North Henderson for a non-conference game scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
