The citizens of Polk County have suffered a great loss. “The Dog Father,” as Lennie Rizzo has been known to many, has passed away. While working at the Humane Society, I was inspired by Lennie’s boundless compassion and optimistic attitude. Through his non-profit, Lennie’s Kids, countless dollars were raised and used to provide medical attention and food for pets whose owners were unable to meet those crucial needs. Determined to hold onto their beloved pets rather than surrender them to the shelter, Lennie created those miracles of rescue and often found homes for stray animals with special needs.

Lennie’s death is a profound loss to pet owners of Polk County, and there are many of us who promise to retell Lennie’s stories in the hope of keeping him alive in our hearts and inspiring others to carry on “his torch.”

Surely, Lennie is in Heaven, surrounded by many animals he helped to save. And as I continue to remember him, I promise to smile and project his optimistic spirit with equal enthusiasm.
