COLUMBUS—The House of Flags Museum has announced that the Polk County History Museum will merge into its downtown Columbus location, offering the public a unified space to celebrate both national and local history. The 5,000-square-foot building, situated next to Veterans Park, will serve as the home for both museums.
In an update, House of Flags curator and treasurer Robert Williamson said historical artifacts and flag exhibits will be interspersed throughout the museums.
“Some of our flag exhibits will be relocated or rearranged in the lobby and the first two rooms, as well as upstairs in the large classroom,” said Williamson. “Our second floor, which has received minimal use, will now be an active part of both museums. We believe this joint operation is the best use of our public building and a benefit to the community, increasing the visibility of both museums.”
The middle meeting room upstairs will house the local historical genealogy materials, and the Flag Museum library will remain intact. The Polk County History Museum will also use the large exhibit room at the far end of the building for more extensive exhibits.
The decision to merge was prompted by the sale of the building that housed the Polk County History Museum, sharply increasing monthly expenses and causing financial strain for the nonprofit organization, which has operated for nearly five decades. The collaboration allows the two museums to share operating costs while maintaining separate boards of directors, budgets, and fundraising efforts.
Reflecting on 2024, Williamson acknowledged the challenges and successes of the year. “This year has been one of the most interesting, challenging, and rewarding times in our 23-year history. Our visitors have continued to enjoy the museum collection and the stories that our flags have to tell about our nation’s history.”
Williamson also said donations to support the museums are welcome, noting that contributions may be tax-deductible.
“We encourage you to visit our renewed and joint exhibits after March 2025. Thank you for your support of our unique and patriotic educational organization.”
