Landrum Cardinal Boys compete in Smokey Mountain Classic

LANDRUM- The Landrum Cardinals boys’ basketball team showcased their dominance in several non-league matchups this last week and competed in an out-of-state holiday tournament.

The Cards continued their early season winning streak against the Blue Ridge Fighting Tigers (2-8) on Friday, extending their streak with an impressive 83-70 victory. This win brought the Cardinals’ season record to 5-0.

In Monday’s game, the Cardinals faced off against the Broome Centurions (2-7) at home, winning 81-63. With this victory, Landrum improved to 6-0.

The Cardinal Boys then traveled to Gatlinburg for the 2024 Smokey Mountain Classic, where they defeated Estill County (6-2) out of Irvine, Kentucky by a score of 79-50.. 

In the first-round game, Isaiah Atkins scored 14 points while maintaining a perfect shooting from the floor and four blocks. He was supported by Benett Edwards, who contributed 10 points, along with seven rebounds and six assists.

In the second round, the Cardinals lost their first game of the year 78-45 to Briarwood Christian (9-6) out of Birmingham, Alabama. The Cardinals also lost their third round game 62-58 to the Forest Wildcats (9-2) out of Ocala, Florida bringing Landrum’s overall record to 7-2. They next play in the Battle at the Border tournament scheduled for December 27-30th. 

In girls’ basketball action, the Landrum Cardinal Girls faced a tough loss on the road against their rivals, the Blue Ridge Fighting Tigers, falling 45-27. After the loss, the Cardinal Girls Varsity team was 4-4, as they turned their attention to a home game against the Broome Centurions (5-3) next. 

However, the Broome Centurions edged past Landrum, defeating the Cardinals 46-43 in a close non-league bout on Monday. With this setback, Landrum’s record in the girls’ division dipped to 4-5. The Cardinal Girls will look to regroup as they host Spartanburg Christian Academy (4-3) on December 27.
