Community invited to ceremony at the Good Shepherd Cemetery
TRYON—On Saturday, November 23, at 11 a.m., Good Shepherd Episcopal Church will host its annual celebration of veterans with a ceremony at the Good Shepherd Cemetery, which is located at 814 Markham Road.
The Honor Guard will raise a new flag over the cemetery, the names of all veterans buried there will be read, and Mari Hashimoto will play violin. A luncheon in the parish hall will follow the event.
In 1906, St. Andrew’s Chapel was built on Green River Plantation for former enslaved and current workers on the plantation by Mary Mills Coxe, wife of Franklin Coxe, three years after his death. Two years later, the church was consecrated by Bishop Junius M. Horner, Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina.
In 1955, St. Andrew’s Chapel was relocated to 814 Markham Road, Tryon, and became Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. In 1959, Good Shepherd Cemetery was created. The cemetery’s trustees received permission from the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina to provide burial space for the entire community.
Organizers ask that the community join them for this moving tribute to our veterans.
