COLUMBUS—The Columbus Winter Farmers Market reopened on Saturday morning at its location behind the Iron Key on 135 Locust St. This marks the first opening since Tropical Storm Helene impacted the area, and vendors were eager to reconnect with the community after a month-long hiatus.

Despite being smaller in scale this year, the Winter Market showcases numerous local crafters, farmers, and small business owners as they prepare to bounce back from what many would call an economic setback.

“We’re all so thankful to be back at the market with everyone. Please come out and support local small businesses,” said Agricultural Economic Development Director Dawn Jordan. “Shopping at the Columbus Farmers Market is a great way to support small businesses.”

The atmosphere was filled with thankfulness, resonating with many vendors and shoppers.

“I think it’s great to be able to get back together with everyone after the storm,” said Heather Smith of Gigi’s Creations, who shared a booth with her mother, Paula Alexander.

“It’s very nice to see everyone again,” added Karin Patrick from Cat’s Meow Pottery. “We’re friends with our vendors and customers and are happy to be back.”

Diana Pack of Wispy Garden Naturals echoed the sentiment, saying, “We’ve missed everyone, and it’s good to be back and know everyone’s alright. I know everyone looks forward to the Winter Market.”

Dan Loudermelt of Dan’s Tree Treasures shared his thoughts on the connections forged through the market.

“We missed seeing everyone,” he said. “After you share a table next to someone for a while, you become friends and kind of a family.”

In addition to these vendors, various local businesses participated, including Ernie Kan’s Columbus Crafts, Beagle Hill Honey, Dancing Doggies, Lost Art Food, Marshall & Wanda McGuinn, One of a Kind Crochet by Joyce, Peaks & Petals, Mayhem Farms, Morning Glory Acres, Crafty Champster, and Appalachian Ways.

The Columbus Winter Farmers Market serves as a vital hub for local entrepreneurship and community engagement, and its return brings a hopeful spirit to the area as residents come together to support one another in the wake of recent challenges.
