The Rotary Club of Tryon, in partnership with 45,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide, will celebrate World Polio Day on October 24.  

In 1998, Rotary International and the World Health Organization launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with the lofty goal of eradicating polio. At that time, there were an estimated 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries. Through worldwide vaccination efforts, the number of polio cases has been reduced by 99%, and Polio is now endemic in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

If you didn’t know about the work Rotary is doing around the world to eradicate Polio, you may know the Rotary Club of Tryon as the organization that:

• donated the clock tower in downtown Tryon to celebrate Rotary International’s 100 Anniversary
• donated $150,000 to help with the construction of a YMCA in Polk County
• awards $40,000 in college scholarships to Polk County students annually
• has donated over 160,000 books to Polk County elementary schools through itsReading is Fundamental Program,
• has provided grants to the Champions for Wildlife, Tryon Performing Arts Center, Pisgah Legal Justice Bus, Tryon Film Festival Youth Program, Foothills Alzheimer’s Group, Outreach, and Roseland Summer Youth Program.

The Rotary Club of Tryon is hosting a membership event in conjunction with World Polio Day on October 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mountain Brook Vineyards Experience Center (731 Phillips Dairy Rd, Tryon, NC 28782). Attendees can meet Club members, enjoy food and beverages, and learn about projects the Club supports locally and around the world.
