Joe William Benjamin Mabry, “Papa Joe,” passed away peacefully on Jan. 23, 2024.

Joe was born November 1, 1927, in Pacolet, SC, to Cora Owensby and Charles Ernest Mabry.

A member of America’s Greatest Generation and a WWll Veteran, Joe served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Hancock/ CV-19 Pacific Aircraft Carrier from 1945 to 1948. During this time, he sailed across the Equator and told stories of this occasion and the huge Equator party they held to celebrate it! He was an active Member of American Legion 28, Spartanburg, SC.

Joe once hitch-hiked from Seattle, WA, to Spartanburg, SC, to be with his family for Christmas. Upon returning home from the Navy, Joe worked for Landrum Mills. He then enjoyed an extensive career and retired from Michelin Tire Company, VO Division. 

His hobbies were working on vintage bulb TVs, modern electronics, and small engine repair.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Ila Mae (Stanford) Mabry; his son, Rocky Earl Mabry; and siblings Elbert Mabry, Herman Mabry, Milliard Mabry, Kathleen Mabry, and Connie Mabry. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Angela S. Metcalf, and her husband Micheal, of Landrum, SC; son, Jeffery Lee Mabry, of Spartanburg, SC; a grandson, Samuel A. Mabry and four great-grandsons of Lincolnton, NC. 

Joe loved his family and his friends deeply, and was always there to lend care and support.

Please join us for a Celebration of Life for Joe Mabry on Sunday, October 20, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Landrum Train Depot, located at 211 S. 562, Landrum, SC, 29356.

Official Military Rites will begin after 3:00 pm.
