COLUMBUS—By all accounts, Polk County’s first Foothills Showdown proved a resounding success Saturday.

The Wolverine volleyball program hosted four state finalists from 2023 – Brevard, Cox Mill, Falls Lake Academy and Kings Mountain – for a full day of preseason competition. Two courts of action kept fans entertained, and a lunch break in the school cafeteria enabled all five teams to eat and socialize together.

Polk County began gearing up to defend its state 1A championship with a very good day. The Wolverines dropped their first matchup to Kings Mountain but rebounded to defeat Falls Lake Academy and Brevard.

Following lunch, the Wolverines defeated 4A runner-up Cox Mill, though the Chargers competed throughout the day without many of their starters, including Nebraska commit Ryan Hunter, who watched from the bench in street clothes, and Louisville commit Jordyn Gray.

Polk County will conclude its preseason on Friday. It will travel to Boiling Springs for scrimmage action starting at 3:30 p.m., before opening the regular season on August 12 at A.C. Reynolds.
