The Board of Directors of the Polk County ICC Foundation held its first annual golf tournament in late October at The Cliffs of Glassy in Travelers Rest, SC.

This event raised money for their New Century Scholars program that provides two years of tuition free education to three students each and every year.

Major sponsors of the tournament were Jeanne and Joe Mize, Patricia and Dale Holl and the Rotary Club of Tryon. Many merchants supported the fundraiser with door prizes and team sponsorships.

Larkins Carolina Grill in Columbus was the lunch sponsor and the Womens Fellowship of Tryon Congregational Church provided breakfast. The Cliffs hosted the tournament and whose pro assessed the handicaps of all 84 players and divided the 21 teams into two flights.

The winning team in Flight 1 from Macon Bank and Sidestreet Pizza included golfers Nick Capozzi, Brian Jones, Anthony Pereira and Ethan Waldman.

Team McGee (Andrew Cody, Sam and Andrew McGee and Jared Neely) finished second. Placing third in Flight 1 was Team Tryon (Glenn Hanford, Jerry Johnson, Danny Jones and Billy McFarland).

Winners in Flight 2 were all Rutherford County teams with 1st place to Team Harrill (Brad, Jason and Thad Harrill and Stephen Matheny), 2nd place to Team Saunders (Bo Roberson, Wayne Rollins, Mike Saunders and Steve Wood) and 3rd place to the Cincinnati Insurance Team (Chris Coffaro, Buddy and Fred Hamrick, and Dan Mays).

There were many prizes for this tournament in addition to those given to the winning teams in each flight.

The Tryon Youth Center and Frank McKaig assisted the Polk ICC Foundation Board by their association with Century BMW of Greenville who donated a BMW Series 128i Convertible if any golfer got a hole-in-one on Hole #17.

The closest person to do this was Ethan Waldman of Tryon coming within 6 feet. There were other hole-in-one prizes from Century BMW but no winners.

The Polk ICC Foundation gave prizes for closest to the pin on the four Par 3 holes with Jason Harrill being the winner on Hole #5, Cecil Clark on Hole #8 and Stan Brown on Hole #13.

There was also a prize for the longest drive on any hole which went to Tommy Porter for his play on Hole #12.

It was a perfect fall day and an opportunity for golfers to play at The Cliffs while simultaneously generating over $25,000 for Polks New Century Scholars educational scholarship program.
