GREEN CREEK—Martha’s Amish Bakery held the first of its two 10th-anniversary celebrations on Saturday, with the second event scheduled for June 8. Originally planned as a single event on May 18th, the celebration was split into two due to weather concerns.
Martha Grabar and her daughter Frieda organized the event to express gratitude to their customers and commemorate their long-standing presence in the community. Frieda reminisced about the bakery’s humble beginnings at the Columbus Farmers Market, where her siblings had to do their homework on the floor because her mother’s baked goods were occupying the dining table.
“This is a business built from scratch,” Frieda said. “It has been a journey of hard work, growth, and learning. We’ve grown it inch by inch, year by year, and we continue to learn and evolve with the business.”
The bakery has introduced popular new items such as cinnamon twists and is currently featuring its strawberry pies, which are made with a shortbread crust and a quart of fresh strawberries.
In addition to the festivities, the event served as a platform for two important food drives. One collection was held for the Foothills Humane Society, accepting pet items, while another was organized for Outreach, gathering unexpired canned goods and non-perishable food items. Donations will be accepted until June 8, underscoring Martha’s commitment to the community.
The event also showcased various local vendors and artists from the community, many of whom are expected to return in June. The upcoming celebration will include wine sampling from Mountain Brook Vineyard and Overmountain Vineyard and a petting zoo and play area for children.
“Our staff has truly been phenomenal and has played a significant role in helping us reach the 10-year mark,” said Frieda. “I’ve learned as much from my staff over the years as they have learned from me, and there are pieces of everybody’s contributions in the bakery.”
Frieda also expressed her gratitude to the loyal customers and the community for their continued support. She specifically mentioned customers like Francine Costner, who, though now departed, was a regular at the bakery, known for wearing her blue shirt and earrings while enjoying a blueberry scone and reading the Tryon Daily Bulletin.
Martha’s Amish Bakery is located at 6431 Highway 9 (Suite #1), Columbus. It’s open from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
