East Rutherford built an early five-run lead Monday en route to an 11-3 victory over Polk County in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference matchup in Boston.
The Cavaliers (7-1, 5-0) remained tied with R-S Central for the conference lead with a 10-hit effort and the pitching of senior Jordan Dixon, who allowed five hits and struck out seven in five innings to earn the win.
East took an early 2-0 edge before Polk County (7-4, 3-2) answered with a run in the top of the second on Avrey Hensley’s leadoff home run. But Colby Condrey’s bases-loaded double in the bottom of the second helped drive the Cavaliers to a 6-1 advantage by the end of the inning.
Polk added a run in the third as Gunnar Alm reached base on a dropped third strike, stole second and scored on Karson Scruggs’ two-out single. The Wolverines added another run in the fourth as Mason Beiler walked, moved to second on an East Rutherford error and scored on Mark Jarrett’s base hit.
That would be all the scoring, though, for Polk.
Hensley, returning from an injury, finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, with Scruggs 2-for-4 with an RBI. Alex Perry and Jarrett had the Wolverines’ other hits.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again Thursday at The Bottoms at 6:30 p.m.
