Vitale’s blast helps power Polk to win at Erwin

Elizabeth Vitale’s three-run homer sparked a six-run outburst Tuesday to help drive Polk County to an 11-5 victory at Erwin.
The Wolverines (2-0) pounded out 12 hits in securing the non-conference win. Vitale had one of the biggest in the game-turning fourth inning.
Erwin gave up two early runs to Polk but fought back to a 2-2 tie entering the fourth. Aslyn Scruggs and Miya Jackson singled to open the inning, with Mia Bradley driving in both with a double for a 4-2 Polk lead.
Sarah Vitale’s base hit drove in Bradley, and Kylee Waters walked before Elizabeth Vitale slammed her first homer of the year, giving the Wolverines an 8-2 advantage.
Jackson’s two-run single in the top of the sixth extended the lead to 10-2 before the Warriors answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Chloe Young scored on Elizabeth Vitale’s single in the seventh for the final run.
Elizabeth Vitale finished 2-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Wolverines. Jackson was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Bradley went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Junie Mitchell finished 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, and Scruggs was 2-for-3.
Sarah Vitale was 1-for-4 with an RBI and also earned the win on the mound, striking out five in the complete-game performance. Young added a 1-for-4 effort.
Polk County is slated to make its home debut on Thursday, hosting Asheville. Start time is 4:30 p.m.
