Tryon Fine Arts Center continues its Love Stories film series with The Bridges of Madison County on Tuesday, February 13. Showtimes are at 2 p.m. (matinee), with a second showing at 7 p.m.
The story is about a brief but deeply romantic love affair between a professional photographer, played by Clint Eastwood, on a four-day assignment, and an Iowa farmer’s wife, played by Meryl Streep. Eastwood also directed the film which was based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Robert James Waller.
Film critic Jeff Shannon cited Clint Eastwood’s performance in The Unforgiven as “offering all the proof anyone needs to know that Eastwood was the right choice to direct The Bridges of Madison County. . . with Eastwood as Kincaid and Meryl Streep as Francesca, this carefully observant love story turns Waller’s pop-lit passion into screen art.”
The Roseman Bridge over the Middle River in Winterset, Iowa, is one of several picturesque covered bridges in Madison County that provide the romantic setting, and additional filming took place in the town of Adel in Dallas County.
Streep and Eastwood received numerous nominations for awards worldwide including the Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Cinema Junpo Awards and Mainichi Film Awards in Japan, where the film was number one at the box office for nine weeks. The Bridges of Madison County also won the ASCAP Top Box Office Award and the Best Foreign Film Award by the Spanish magazine Fotogramas among many others.
The Tryon Fine Arts Center Box Office opens at 1:30 p.m. for the 2 o’clock matinee and at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments and time to meet up with friends before the evening show. For more information about this film series and other events at TFAC visit tryonarts.org or call 828-859-8322.
