Spartanburg Public Works asks Landrum residents to limit water usage

FOOTHILLS—The ongoing drought in Polk County and surrounding areas continues to cause adverse impacts throughout the region.

Drought.gov, a “National Integrated Drought Information System,” currently describes Polk County as currently being in a state of severe drought. The county was reclassified to severe drought instead of extreme drought after recent rains. The area experienced its sixth driest month of October in the past 129 years.

With drought conditions taking a toll all across the area, the Spartanburg Public Works officials discussed the conditions currently affecting the area surrounding the City of Landrum at a recent meeting, and asked water customers to take steps to conserve water resources. In previous months, stream flows that normally supply the Landrum Water Treatment Facility have been negatively affected by abnormally dry weather.

Spartanburg Public Works stressed that water restrictions are still purely voluntary, but is asking that Landrum residents take precautions such as inspection and repair of leaking faucets, using water-preserving showerheads and automatic shut-off nozzles, only doing full loads for laundry and washing machines, reducing washing vehicles and limiting irrigation of lawns between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. to conserve water.

Spartanburg Water plans to continue to monitor water use in the Landrum area, and share drought updates with customers as needed.
