Series begins with ‘When Harry Met Sally’
Tryon Fine Arts Center starts its 2023-2024 film series with the 1989 classic romantic comedy, When Harry Met Sally on Tuesday, October 11. This year, the Fine Arts Center is adding a 2 p.m. matinee, with a second showing of each film at 7 p.m. This year’s series will present notable love stories shown on the second Tuesday of each month through May 2024.
The combined wit of writer, Nora Ephron, writer/director, Rob Reiner, and the comedic talent and chemistry of Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan turned this romantic comedy into an instant classic. Releasing the film without fanfare in limited locations, Columbia Pictures allowed word-of-mouth to generate interest before full-scale distribution. The strategy worked and the film’s appeal continues to this day.
For their efforts, Nora Ephron won the British Academy Film Award and a Writers Guild of America award and received an Oscar nomination. Rob Reiner received four nominations while Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan won American Comedy awards and Carrie Fisher was nominated for her supporting role. Marc Shaiman won the ASCAP Film and Television Music Award for his score, which included classic recordings by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Bing Crosby, and Harry Connick Jr.
The Tryon Fine Arts Center Box Office opens at 1:30 p.m. for the 2 o’clock matinee and at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments and time to meet up with friends before the evening show. For more information about this film series and other events at TFAC visit tryonarts.org or call (828) 859-8322.
