TRYON—In its first concert of the 2023-2024 season, Tryon Concerts will present cellist Johannes Moser and pianist Marc-André Hamelin. The concert will take place at the Tryon Fine Arts Center on Thursday, October 5, at 7:30 in the evening.

Johannes Moser is an acclaimed cellist who has appeared in concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic at the Proms and other distinguished orchestras in the United States and Europe. He has collaborated with notable soloists, including Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Jonathan Biss, Midori and Marc-André Hamelin, and has appeared at summer festivals around the world. He is known as a master of the classics as well as a champion of new music who has commissioned works from contemporary composers. Moser plays a 1694 Guarneri cello from a private collection.

Marc-André Hamelin is known as a consummate musician and innovator in programming. He has performed and recorded works by Leonard Bernstein, William Bolcom, Alexander Scriabin, Charles Ives and others in addition to recent releases of Schubert’s Piano Sonata in B-flat Major and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Audience members will remember Hamelin from his 2021 performance of Bach, Scriabin, Prokofiev and Beethoven. Hamelin is also a composer, and he and Moser will perform one of his compositions at the October 5 concert.

Nadia Boulanger’s Three Pieces for Cello and Piano will begin the program. This beloved work moves from dreamy to hopeful to lively over the course of the three pieces. Next will be Marc-André Hamelin’s “Four Perspectives,” a complex and intriguing work. Claude Debussy’s Cello Sonata in D Minor will follow. This is a work the composed deemed the essence of French music and was one of his last compositions. The program will end with César Franck’s Sonata for Piano and Cello in A Major. This is a dramatic and engaging work, one that covers a broad range of emotions.

The Foundation for St. Luke’s Hospital will host a pre-concert reception in the TFAC lobby. All concertgoers are invited to attend this wonderful event and enjoy the good food and drink. The Foundation’s mission is to raise funds in support of the community hospital, and Tryon Concerts is grateful to the Foundation for its generosity and hospitality.
