Polk County will open the state 2A girls soccer playoffs on Monday with a home match against Newton-Conover.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association released pairings Friday for the state playoffs. The Wolverines, who finished the season with a 16-3-1 record, received the 13th seed in the 2A West bracket.
That earned Polk a first-round match against the Red Devils (13-6), slated to start Monday at 6 p.m. Newton-Conover finished second in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference, a half-game behind Bandys.
The Red Devils, who have won four of their last five matches, feature an offense led by Briseyda Vasquez and Lilly Gargis. The Newton-Conover defense allowed 24 goals in 19 matches, giving up more than two goals only on three occasions.
The winner of Monday’s match will face the winner of the Southwestern Randolph at Hendersonville match.
