Tryon– Gary Randy “Shot” Jackson, 77, passed away on April 30, 2023, in Hospice of Rutherford County.
He was born on April 7, 1946, in the family home on Coopers Gap Road in the Sunnyview Community to the late James Roy “Jim” Jackson and Tempie Thompson Jackson. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Floyd “Sonny” Jackson. He was of the Baptist faith.
Gary grew up in Polk County and graduated from Polk High School before enlisting in the Navy on August 15, 1965. He served in the capacity of River Patrol Boat Commander and the Charge Engine Mechanic on the USS Howard W. Gilmore. He served two tours of active combat duty in Vietnam, receiving many achievement awards and training certificates in the Naval Amphibious School such as Engineering, Mechanical, and Language Training of the Vietnamese language. He also earned medals such as the National Defense Service Medal and the Bronze Star. Upon release from active duty, he served as a Reserve until his Honorable Discharge in 1973.
Gary worked as a machine mechanic and in construction on the side until retiring from Mitsubishi Poly Film in Greer SC in 2006. He was known for his love of travel and motorcycles. He was also actively involved in the Spartanburg HOG association.
Gary is survived by his two sons, Neil Jackson, and Trent Jackson [Jackie], 3 grandchildren, and step-grandchildren. Other family members include two sisters, Barbara Burrell, and Sharon Mason. As well as his ex-wife, Joy Conner, with whom he remained close friends with.
The memorial service will be announced at a later date.
