The Foothills Music Club met on Thursday, April 13 at Tryon First Baptist Church. To celebrate the club’s 35th anniversary, members enjoyed performances by the recent winners of the Young Musicians Scholarships.
The first meeting of the Foothills Music Club took place in April, 1988. The idea for the club was suggested by the late Lesley Oakes and supported by other local musicians including Betty Van Buskirk and Kathleen Erwin, all three for whom scholarships are named.
The original goal, which has continued to the present, was to encourage musicians in their art by providing an opportunity to perform. By October of 1988, the club had become fully established with monthly meetings being held with musical performances by members. Through the years, as well as continuing the monthly meetings, members also gave public performances for the community.
In 1994 the Young Musicians Scholarship Program was begun in order to encourage young musicians to continue their musical studies. The scholarship program has become a central focus of the club. Through the generosity of club members and community donors, thousands of dollars have been awarded to promising young musicians.
The FMC was incorporated in 2012 and recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization in 2013. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
The Foothills Music Club meets the second Thursday of each month from September through May. Information about membership may be obtained by sending a request to: Foothills Music Club, P.O. Box 463, Lynn, NC 29750.
