Local artist to create local history mural for Pace Park

 

SALUDA–Work has begun on a mural that will go up in downtown Saluda’s Pace Park this spring. The mural is being painted by local artist Susan Olivari, owner of the Art House Venue in East Flat Rock.

 

“I researched several local sources for historic photos and history,” says Olivari about the inspiration for the mural. “It will serve as a reminder of the rich history of this quaint, beautiful mountain town for locals and visitors.”

 

Olivari is a self-taught artist who’s been painting since she was a child. Her proposal was chosen after a competition conducted by the City Board of Commissioners.  

 

The board solicited concept designs from area artists via social media and then selected three finalists. Olivari’s sketch was selected through a survey conducted last fall.  

“The city has had a history of supporting local artisans and continues to support the art community as economic opportunities in the region for art and artists grow with the region’s popularity,” says Saluda City Manager Steven Orr.

 

Olivari is painting the mural in her home studio. The town plans to have it up in Pace Park in time for the Saluda Arts Festival on May 20. The project is being funded by the city with help from a grant from the Polk County Appearance Commission.
