This week at Tryon Theatre is the most recent installment of the Marvel universe, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (Reed 2023), a wild sci-fi adventure that takes the viewer into the “Quantum Realm,” a microscopic dimension of reality where the laws of our physics cease to have governance. 

This film is the third of the Marvel films featuring Ant-Man as the central character. Within the scope of the Marvel cinematic universe, the Ant-Man films have been predominantly lighter-hearted, but also more earnest in their emotions than many of their counterparts. 

The charm of the Ant-Man films is largely a credit to their eponymous lead, Ant-Man, real name Scott Lang, who is played by the ageless and ever-charming Paul Rudd. Rudd’s trademark sense of comedic aloofness atop emotional depth has been a lauded pairing with the character of Lang, for whom being a hero is a largely unchosen and unsure occupation. 

In this newest venture for Ant-Man, he finds himself exploring a foreign dimension of reality at its smallest scale, the Quantum Realm (a quantum is the smallest unit of any measurable phenomena or entity, even hypothetically). In this unseen world, Ant-Man encounters a dangerous and malevolent intelligence that is set to become the next big villain in the Marvel franchise. 

For any filmgoer seeking the guaranteed thrills of a Marvel film, this film won’t disappoint. There are classic battles of good and evil, personal journeys of emotional growth and loss and no shortage of quips and laughs to keep the mood light. Of course, these qualities will be situated amongst a feast of light and soundscapes, as Disney brings the full force of its technological wizardry to life. On a separate note, we want to take a moment to highlight a few important details of timing in the next month. On Sunday, April 2, we will have an evening showing (show at 7 p.m., doors at 6:30) of the musical film “Jesus Christ: Superstar,” in conjunction with the Congregational Church. Secondly, we will have an evening showing of “Casablanca” (Curtiz 1943) on Tuesday, April 4, as the first installment of the revitalized Tryon Film Society. Thirdly, we will be closed on Sunday, April 9, for the Easter Holiday. With this in mind, we will be adding a matinee showtime on Saturday, April 8 (show at 3:30 p.m., doors at 3), on top of our existing Saturday evening show.
