On a recent Saturday, the youth at Holy Cross Church in Tryon went on their grocery shopping trip for food donations to Thermal Belt Outreach.

Sixteen youths from ages 5-15 were joined by a combination of parents and chaperones. The trip resulted in 510 pounds of food being donated to Thermal Belt Outreach as a contribution for their food pantry requests.

This quarterly outing is organized by the Holy Cross Youth Committee to show our young people the connection between pledges put in the offertory plate and how it directly helps those in need, both in our community and elsewhere. Thermal Belt Outreach provides the group with a shopping list and the Holy Cross Outreach Committee gives them a budget. Lessons in maintaining a budget and shopping for bargains to stretch the dollars are also part of the outing.

Once groceries are purchased they are taken directly to Thermal Belt Outreach. The youth unload the cars, help stock the shelves and are given a tour of the facility along with why it exists and who it helps.

The trip concludes around noon with everyone treated to a well-deserved pizza!
