The Green Blades Garden Club of Tryon held its first meeting of the new year on January 12 at the Tryon Fine Arts Center.
Ryan Searcy, Polk County Ranger from N.C. Forestry Service gave an informative program on two insects that have invaded our area, as well as an alert for a potential invader. Mr. Searcy presented recommendations for both chemical and biological controls for the Wooly Adelgid, which is killing hemlock trees, and the Emerald Ash Borer which is decimating our ash trees.
Mr. Searcy encouraged members to be proactive in the removal of the invasive Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) in an effort to control the spread of the Spotted Lantern Fly, which has become a serious problem in other parts of the country.
