A nightmarish start spoiled Polk County’s hopes for a win Tuesday as the Wolverines dropped a 51-28 decision in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference girls basketball action at Hendersonville.

The Bearcats improved to 4-5 overall, 2-0 in league play. The Wolverines dropped to 5-4, 1-1.

How it happened: Hendersonville scored the game’s first 28 points, building the advantage into the second quarter before Polk County scored on a Kylie Lewis basket in the paint.

The Bearcats extended the lead to 44-4 at the half as Polk County, playing without injured second-leading scorer Mia Bradley, struggled to find points.

The Wolverines did close the game with a 12-0 run and kept Hendersonville from scoring in the final eight minutes.

Bailey Staton led Polk County with 15 points, with Jayden Duncan scoring five. Charley Dusenbury and Lewis each scored four.

Polk County will travel Dec. 30 to T.C. Roberson for a non-conference game.
