The coming of Easter brings brilliant morning sunrises brushed wide over greening mountains as silver-notes of bird song lift to spring sky. 

 

Some of us attend early sunrise services, some decorate eggs, some get out new Easter outfits, some dig toes in sweet new grass. 

 

When I was little (yes, yes, back when dinosaurs roamed with station wagons), my brothers were scrubbed free of dirt (a rare occurrence!), well-trimmed hair combed back, stuffed into freshly-starched shirts and neatly-ironed dark pants. None of these neat outfits lasted the day for any of us!

 

Girls always had new outfits—organdy dresses with sashes, scratchy crinolines beneath, patent-leather shoes shining, white lace-trimmed ankle socks, delicate white gloves, an Easter bonnet, and always THE Easter basket. The Easter bunny never failed to make a surprise delivery—a large chocolate bunny, rainbow jelly bean eggs, you name it.

 

These days, my idea of an Easter outfit has changed a bit. No perfect white gloves to be seen; but there is a moss rabbit topiary waiting by the goldfish pond, just in case “the” basket comes once again. Even grown kids miss those days!

• During spring break, Saluda Community Library will have fun, messy outdoor art activities at Art in the Park at McCreery Park, April 20 at 4 p.m. 

 

• Saluda Winter Market is at Saluda Center, 64 Greenville Street from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on April 23.

 

• Pot luck and bingo night at Saluda Center, 64 Greenville Street, is April 25, 6 p.m. Bring a side dish to share.  

 

• Saluda Visitor Center at 20 West Main Street is open noon-3  weekdays, and 11- 4 weekends. 

 

• The 17th Saluda Arts Festival is May 21 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; volunteers are needed to work shifts—section leaders, assistants, information tent, parking, golf cart drivers. If interested, contact Linda Bailey at boblindabailey@hotmail.com.
