COLUMBUS — Alyce Stone Sanders Poe, 92, rose to Heaven on December 1, 2020, to join her
beloved Lord of The Dance.
She was born in Springfield, Ohio, the daughter of Carlos W. and Jeanne Stone. She was a life-long
homemaker, bookkeeper, community volunteer and a current member of Tryon Presbyterian
Church. She resided at Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC.
Well known as Alex, she was inducted into the Second Wind Hall of Fame, recognizing 25 years of
volunteer service with AARP, preparing hundreds of IRS tax returns each year at no charge, for those
who needed help.
Alex was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow for her major donations to the Int’l Rotary Foundation for
the eradication of Polio in the world.
Along with her husband, they made 54 annual grants over 9 years to needy ACTS student employees
to assist in their college expenses.
Survivors are her husband, Lawrence J. (Larry) Poe of Columbus, two sons, John P. (Phil) Sanders,
Jr of St Augustine, FL, Matt Sanders of Greenville, SC, a grandson, John P. (Trey) Sanders III of
Henderson, NV, a niece, Katie Springer of Greeley, CO, and three step-daughters, Holly Poe Durbin
of Orange, CA, Cynthia Poe of Toledo, OH and Laurel Gallagher of LaGrange, IL.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, John P. Sanders,
and her sister, Betty Jane Yates.
Delayed by the pandemic, a Memorial is scheduled for Alex at the Tryon Presbyterian Church at
11am on July 14 th . Following her wishes, the event will be a joyful celebration of her life, not a
mourning. For her Christian love of the hymns, memorials to the TPC Music Fund would be most
appropriate.
