TRYON – Lula M. Burrell of Tryon passed away March 15, 2020 at White Oak Manor of Tryon.
A native of Polk County, she was the daughter of the late Mark William Burrell and Mabel B. Pace Burrell. With her parents, she is also predeceased by five brothers, Gene William Burrell, Alvin “Bud” Burrell, Coit J. and wife Pauline Summey Burrell, Archie and wife Dorothy Currie Burrell, Lee and wife Elizabeth Stott Burrell; five sisters, Lucy J. and husband Gene Gosnell, Nellie Burrell, Evelyn B. and husband, Charles Flynn, Alma “Sis” and husband, David Daniel Walker, Arpha Burrell; three nieces, Coy “Skeeter” B. Campbell and Lorraine B. Lowery, Bonnie Setzer; three nephews, Allen Gosnell, Daniel Woody Walker and Tommy Burrell.
Lula was a salutatorian graduate of Tryon High School. She was secretary/bookkeeper for the Tryon City Schools for 20 years. The Tryonite (Annual) was dedicated to her in 1948 and 1958 and was recipient of 10 year and 20 year pins. She was the recipient of the Educational Secretary of the Year trophy for In-Service workshops at Western Carolina University in 1963.
Lula was an employee of the Henderson County Schools for 30 years. She was a NCAEOP member of the Local District and State Association and a life member of the National. She served many years on a number of committees for each. She was also a member of the NCAE, a life member of the NAEOP, School Personnel Association and a life member of the N.C. Retired Government Employees Association. Lula was president for the District 1 NCAEOP (1952-53) and state NCAEOP (1957-58). In 1994, a student scholarship was named, Lula M. Burrell Scholarship. In 2002, Lula was honored with the EOP award being named the Lula M. Burrell EOP of the Year. Lula was inducted into the Henderson County Education Foundation on April 22, 2010 at the Hendersonville Country Club. She was a charter member of the State NCAEOP and has attended 61 conferences and also attended a number of nationals. Lula was a charter member of the Polk County Historical Association. She loved helping others.
Surviving are eight nieces, three nephews, twelve great nieces, fourteen great nephews, ten great-great nieces, eleven great-great nephews, three great-great-great nieces and one great-great-great nephew.
A celebration of Lula’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 2, 2021 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon.
